It finds repeated patterns and represents them with shorter codes.
Lossless (ZIP): You can get back exactly what you put in. Like a puzzle!
Lossy (JPEG, MP3): Some data is thrown away. Like a blurry photo!
The smaller you make it, the more quality you lose!
