The Festival of Lights - celebrating right after Dashain!
Tihar is a beautiful festival of lights that comes right after Dashain!
It's a 5-day festival where people light candles and oil lamps everywhere!
The whole country glows at night - it's magical!
Tihar comes about 2 weeks after Dashain, usually in October or November!
It lasts for 5 days, and each day honors something different!
People honor crows - they're seen as messengers. Families put out food for crows in the morning!
Dogs get special treats and garlands! Dogs are considered helpers of humans and are honored!
Cows are decorated with flowers and fed special food. Cows are sacred in Nepal!
This day honors cows (Govardhan) or the goddess of wealth (Laxmi). People clean their houses and light lots of lamps!
Sisters put Tika on their brothers' foreheads and give them gifts. Brothers give gifts back to sisters!
People decorate with:
• Oil lamps (Diyo)
• Candles
• Flower garlands
• Colored powder ( Rangoli ) on the ground!
